LO1 – Analyse a range of audio visual promos Film Trailer Reviews

Godzilla 2014 Trailer
The purpose of the trailer is to entice the viewer and build up tension throughout the trailer so the viewer is eager to see more of the film. As it is supposed to be tense and scary, the purpose is also to shock the viewer, which will make them want to see the film. The lighting used is very minimal, making the whole trailer very dark which makes the trailer more tense and shows the mood is very anxious, which connotes something is about to happen. The trailer is fairly linear, and shows the progression of the monster coming from the sea to the city, and showing the panic levels of the people rapidly increase. The titles used are not to explain the story, but to just advertise the film, but to keep them in the theme, are written in a blood splatter font, which connotes their will be fatalities when fighting godzilla in the film. The music is very atmospheric, increasing in pitch and volume for the most tense parts of the trailer, to build up the suspense. The scene is set in a dirty, derelict, burnt out city, which shows the audience something major has happened there, so it must have been caused by something, leading the audience to want to find out what has happened. The genre of the film is sci-fi thriller, which is why the music and atmosphere builds up tension in the film. The content in the trailer is an array of quick takes following one long take which builds an atmosphere of fear and suspense, only showing a silhouette of the monster. As the lighting is dark, and there is lots of musky, smoky scenery which denotes there has been a large event to have caused this, but it connotes an atmospheric wait for something more destructive to happen. The flashing red flares and fast camera cuts connotes an emergency and will add panic to the trailer and the people watching it. This is done as it is in the stylings of a thriller/sci-fi film, which is the genre of this one. The audience will be on the edge of their seats because of the nail biting action on screen, which is what the trailer is supposed to do.

Grown Ups 2 Trailer
The purpose of the trailer is to entice the audience to watch the film by showing them how funny the film will be and how they will be able to go and have a great time watching the film and have memorable moments of comedy which will be entertaining for them. The Grown ups 2 trailer starts off with a previous lookback from the antics of the first film, highlighting the funny parts, which will make the audience remember the film as being very comical. It also shows to people that have not seen the first one, that the basic storyline is easy to grasp and watching the first one is not a necessity, and it could also make them go out and buy it. As it is a comedy, it then goes on to show lots of the funniest parts of the film, giving the storyline in a blue, fun font, which connotes the film is a family friendly comedy and enjoyable for everyone. The actors names are also given in the same font, with still shots of the actors next to them, this is very important as the people involved are renowned comedy actors which will be a big persuasion for some of the audience. As the film is based on american values of raising kids properly in an all American environment, the music is happy, classic rock, from America which connotes the film is an american one and the characters stand for these values. The trailer is in a linear format, so it is easy to follow, and includes very funny parts so that the audience will be eager to see the film. The takes are fairly slow and show fairly large sections of the film so that the jokes can be understood, which is a convention of this genre. As there is no need for tension or suspense, the upbeat music, slow moving clips and long screenshots of actors is very stylistic of the genre. The trailer should have the audience laughing at the many comic elements, and by showing a variety of comic styles, shows the audience that anyone will be able to go and have a laugh. There is no need for changes of pace in the trailer and there are no twists as the trailer itself is only to make people laugh and want to see the film.

Hurt Locker Trailer
The purpose of the film is to get people to want to watch the film. This is done by creating a very realistic look into life on the warzone, it is meant to provoke an emotional response from the audience by shocking them, as well as getting them to put themselves in the shoes of a bomb disposal expert. It is also meant to entertain the audience with a suspenseful and interesting story. The music on the trailer is fairly quiet, setting a calm atmosphere, but changes to a loud deep rumble when either titles or short fast takes are used to build suspense. The loud contrast in the music breaks up the calm and connotes that anything can happen in the warzone very suddenly. The titles are White and Red text on a black background and have captions in them that tell the audience the personalities of a bomb squad member. The font is slightly broken up like a damaged building which connotes the buildings in the area are derelict and have been broken and shattered by the explosions. There is a title in the middle section of the film that show the awards, nominations and achievements of the film, which will appeal to some people that will only see films that are rated highly by critics. The red and white text comes back on screen to show quotations of how good the film is from various people, critics and companies, again reinforcing the critical quality of the film. Towards the end of the trailer the takes become faster and the cuts dip to black and give more tension to the trailer and keep cutting to the sound of a heartbeat, getting faster each cut, which connotes the heartbeat of a soldier in the field when disarming a bomb, showing the immense pressure put on the men. This will have the audience on the edge of their seat, wanting to find out what happens to the squad, it should excite them and make them want to go out and watch the film. The trailer is very stylistic of the action genre, helping to build tension without revealing the true happenings in the end. It is linear, so the trailer acts as a mini film, leaving it as a cliffhanger, which is a big part of the action film genre, it will make the audience want to find out how the film ends.

Source Code Trailer
The purpose of this trailer is to confuse the audience which will hopefully build suspense and make them want to watch the film and find out more. The source code trailer starts off with a short series of very fast, erratic and confusing cuts from a variety of different shots. It then cuts to a shot of the main character talking to a woman, adding further to the confusion, until a very high tech looking piece of text comes on to give another confusing throw to the audience. The text connotes a very futuristic place, or piece of technology which is very relevant to the next part of the trailer. The quite, atmospheric music then cuts out to a large explosion as the train explodes and cuts to black, this sudden explosion is stylistic to the thriller/action genre and is meant to excite and intrigue the audience. The scene then dips to back and a shot of the mans eye, zooming out to his face is revealed. As the story is very complex, the next part is an explanation as to what the film is about and what has just happened to the man, this will save reading time for the audience and allow them to show more footage of the film. The music then becomes very calm, the cuts slow down and the music rests to a low pitch, slow rhythmic beat. Often the cuts connote an eye closing, as if the viewer is in the scene watching it from their own perspective which will make them want to be in the film, and making a personal connection with the character. Towards the end, another stylistic convention of a blockbuster occurs, where the names of the actors appear on screen in between different cuts. The music becomes faster and louder near the end until it stops for a loud train horn, then a cut to the title of the film, which is done to make the trailer memorable for the audience. Due to it being a thriller/action type film, a cliffhanger is left at the end to keep the audience wanting to see more.

Woman in Black Trailer
The trailer is made to present large suspense and a horror theme to the audience as well as scaring the audience, making them want to find out what is haunting this man. The start is a series of slow shots, with cuts that dip to black that create mystery. The music sound as though it is played on a string instrument, possibly a harp at a high pitch which is very mysterious adding to the air of mystery in the film. The shots then leave the main character with a very confusing, other worldly lampshade, then a shocking face at the other side to make the audience jump. The music gets louder and the pace suddenly increases to create a spooky and frantic atmosphere, then cutting to a longer shot of the main character to distill the tension. The titles then appear to scare the audience more, using a ghostly font connoting that there is some form of haunting going on. A variety of scary occurings start to appear in the next few shots, with music getting louder and eerier, this continues until the end of the trailer. There are lots of screams and shots to make people jump which are very stylistic of the horror genre, as they are meant to frighten the audience and make them face their fears meaning this trailer is also in with the genre. The title then pops up in a very ghoulish font, again connoting the meaning and ideas in the film, which are ghosts and haunting. The trailer then finishes with the protagonist looking into the eyes of the ghost with a loud scream. This trailer will have the audience excited and scared to make them want to find out what happens to the main character and challenge themselves to sit through this terrifying film.
